The Yorkshire Gliding Club

Gliding is an adventure sport for people from age 14 up into their 90's. It offers the purest flying experience, using up-drafts to soar the skies, often for hours at a time. It is also one of the most affordable way to learn to fly due to the fact that gliding clubs are mostly volunteer run organisations; which also makes soaring a very friendly and social sport.

The Yorkshire Gliding Club was founded in 1934, by a group of pioneering aviators seeking to understand the potential of powerless flight. Today, we are dedicated to providing high-quality training and facilities, affirming our position as the best soaring club in the North of England. We offer professional, friendly instruction guided by our national sporting body, the British Gliding Association.

To get a feel for our sport and our club explore our website to find out more about why we love what we do.

Monk Park Farm

In February 2021, Monk Park Farm was bought by new owners, and a full programme of investment and improvements began to breathe new life into the farm.

Ahead of reopening in April 2021, we got to work refurbishing the entrance, toilets, and café, upgrading the outdoor play area, and adding a huge new sandpit – all before welcoming our first visitors!

Later that year, we introduced electric karts and held our very first Halloween Spooktacular – which quickly became a seasonal favourite.

In 2022, we extended the Petting Barn, launched a brand new kids’ mini train ride, added not one but two giant air bouncers, and gave our pond-side picnic area a full refresh. We also worked hard to make our paths more pram and wheelchair friendly, and proudly hosted our first ever Christmas Experience.

In 2023, we kept the fun coming with the launch of Pig Racing and our hugely popular Foam Parties – both massive hits with families!

The improvements continued in 2024, with new all-weather paths through the Woodland Walk and ramp access added to both the café and shop. We also introduced one of our most-loved experiences to date – Pig Snuggling, giving visitors the chance to get up close and cosy with our friendly micro pigs.

Now in 2025, we’re continuing to grow! This summer will see the opening of 42 Wallaby Way – our brand-new wallaby walkthrough, along with an incredible new animal barn and a much-needed toilet block – all designed to make your visit even more enjoyable.

Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre

A visit to Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre is inspiring and up lifting.

We have one of the largest collections of flying birds in the North. The centre is home to around 100 birds from 50 different species from around the world which enables us to fly an amazing variety of birds in each of our daily free flight displays. All set in  our beautiful Yorkshire countryside. We fly a selection of owls, vultures, eagles and kites to name but a few of the different species that call the centre their home.

During our 35-40 minute flying display you can expect to get very close to our fantastic birds as they swoop, dive and soar over your head. Witness the heaviest species of eagle in the world take to the sky, marvel at the silent flight of the graceful barn owl and appreciate the beauty and importance of the vulture species to our world. Our passionate and knowledgeable bird staff will provide a light-hearted and informative commentary throughout the flying display.

We fly different birds in each of our displays so please try and stay for more than one, keep an eye out for the cheeky kookaburra, naughty caracaras and the graceful White Storks. During your time at the centre, you will hopefully learn about the important conservation projects we are currently undertaking. By visiting you will help support the centre and its ongoing conservation projects.

In-between displays you can take a walk around the aviaries to view our very impressive collection of birds in their rest areas. You may also see more birds flying on one of our very popular experience days. With block paved paths throughout the centre is fully accessible for all. Our well stocked gift shop has souvenirs for all ages along with a selection of cold snacks and hot and cold drinks. Picnic benches are situated around the centre so you can enjoy your snacks and drinks bought at the centre or alternatively, you are welcome to use the benches to enjoy your own picnics.

Mathewsons - The Classic Car People

The Early Years

Mathewson’s began in 1970 with the sale of a modern car and commercial vehicles in Bedfordshire. Supplying both retail and trade customers. An enviable reputation was built. (Yes. It’s been a family business operating for over 50 years!!)

Even back then the showrooms were always full of Derek Mathewson’s true passion – Vintage & Classic cars. (In fact, we still have a number of those early acquisitions in our collection.)

During this period Mathewson’s also branched into the vehicle contract hire and leasing business supplying vehicles throughout the UK.

With family connections in the North of the country and after many holidays in the area, 1988 saw the family’s move to North Yorkshire. The operations were initially retained in Bedfordshire, just in case we didn’t settle, before finally being sold in the late 80s.

Our Scarborough based garage was initially purchased in 1988 before adding the Malton garage in 1990 and then the Pickering garage in 1992.

The 1990s saw us predominantly operating two main dealer franchises, KIA & Skoda, with the Classic & Vintage side of the business very secondary. Interesting times, but this was destined to change.

Our 2020 expansion with a new showroom unit located just a mile from Thornton le Dale enabled us to display an additional 100+ cars/motorbikes and a whole host of memorabilia. All undercover!

Meanwhile, our personal collection continues to grow with a handful of new acquisitions each year. We currently have around 75 classic cars, 50 motorbikes, a dozen classic commercial vehicles and a large collection of automobilia, with a dream of one-day owning premises large enough to hold our total operation/collection on one location. One day!

9 auctions are now held annually, with entry lot numbers continuing to rise. Currently, we handle a wide range of memorabilia together with around 4000 vehicles each year. A mixture of lorries, tractors, cars and motorbikes,

Safely allowing public attendance to our auctions is a priority, together with the re-opening of our museum, however for the time being we will continue to open our shop every day and pre-auction viewings of all lots are encouraged!

We continue to attend many vehicle gatherings each year including the all-Party Parliamentary Historic Vehicle Group and are members of the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs (FBVHC).

Climb the keep for panoramic views over the castle, the ancient town and Swaledale beyond.

Wander the towers, halls and chapels around the vast grassy courtyard and enjoy the views from the tranquil Cockpit Garden.

Stories of the castle and its people are revealed in wide-ranging displays and interactives, and there’s a chance to design your own heraldry.

You can also learn the story of the conscientious objectors imprisoned here for refusing to fight in the First World War. Interactives let you hear their voices and explore the poignant graffiti on their cell walls.

York Minster

York Minster is one of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals.

Since the 7th century, the Minster has been at the centre of Christianity in the north of England and today remains a thriving church rooted in the daily offering of worship and prayer.

The Minster was built for the glory of God. Every aspect of this ancient building - from the exquisite, handcrafted stone through to the unrivalled collection of medieval stained glass - tells the story of Jesus Christ.

We invite you to discover this sacred place and the love of God at its heart, which has attracted people from across the globe for more than 1000 years.
